Joann’s spokesperson confirmed that the planned store closures are part of the company’s ongoing Chapter 11 process. Joann has already filed a motion in court requesting approval to close approximately 500 of its locations. The spokesperson emphasized that “right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN.”
Although the company has not released a comprehensive list of the closing stores, previous reports from USA TODAY indicated that at least eight locations across Iowa, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts were slated to close in early January. These closures were part of a routine evaluation and optimization of store locations, which occurred before the company’s second bankruptcy filing.
Court documents reveal that the upcoming closures will affect stores across all 50 states, with certain states expected to be hit hardest. California, New York, Michigan, Florida, and Indiana are among those states where Joann plans to shutter the most locations. These closures are a part of Joann’s broader strategy to restructure and streamline its operations as it navigates through its Chapter 11 proceedings.
