The selection of Bongino puts two of the president’s most fervent allies atop the country’s top federal law enforcement agency at a moment where Democrats are worried that the president may order officers to target his foes.

Bongino has a Master’s degree in psychology from CUNY as well as having completed an MBA at Penn State. He served with the New York Police Department from 1997 until 1999, when he began with the Secret Service, where he served on the protective detail for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Bongino had been doing commentary on Fox News for over a decade and hosted a Saturday night show with the network from 2021 to 2023. He is currently a host of The Dan Bongino Show, one of Spotify’s most popular podcasts.
For several years after Rush Limbaugh’s death in 2021, he was also selected for a radio show that aired in the same time slot as the famous commentator. In addition, Bongino has written best-selling books and risen to prominence as a conservative pundit.
He also ran in 2012 for a US Senate seat in Maryland, and in 2014 and 2016 for congressional seats in Maryland and Florida, having moved there in 2015. He lost all three races.
Bongino will serve as Deputy to Kash Patel when he runs the FBI — a man who has expressed his intent to completely overhaul the bureau, including relocation of hundreds of employees from its Washington headquarters, and a renewed focus on the FBI’s traditional crime-fighting responsibilities.
Deputy directors are the No. 2 officials at the F.B.I. and are traditionally career agents responsible for the bureau’s day-to-day law enforcement activities.
